Course Description:
The course is designed for those interested in the portrayals of heroines in multimodality, who are often neglected and overshadowed by their male counterparts. In this course, we will have 5-6 heroines for investigation as they are presented in different media, such as movies, TV series, or comics. In this way, the discussion of translating these heroines in different portrayals will go beyond the general concept and theory of literary translation, but go deeper into the presentation of translation and gender, comics in translation, and translation and multimodality. More importantly, we will connect these portrayals of heroines in our time not merely to their male counterparts but the ones in Asian countries, especially Taiwan. In doing so, we can step further to general issues in cultural/gender studies by the end of the semester. Students are expected to familiarize themselves with these heroines before the course starts and to rigorously participate in classroom discussion with translation assignments.
